How much does TikTok Shop actually take per sale?
Roughly 38% to 52% of GMV for a first-year product, according to Eightx's July 2026 model, once fulfillment, creator commission, GMV Max and returns are added to the referral fee. Its base case is 46.7%. Agencies report the referral fee rose from 6% to 8% on August 4, 2026, but TikTok's public table still shows 6%.
Key takeaways
- Eightx's July 2026 model puts TikTok Shop's all-in take at 46.7% of GMV for a $40 first-year product, within a range of 38% to 52%.
- Agencies report the US referral fee rose from 6% to 8% on August 4, 2026, but TikTok's public fee table, last revised in May 2026, still shows 6%.
- Your settlement statements in Seller Center are the only reliable way to confirm which referral rate your shop pays.
- Creator commission, GMV Max spend, fulfillment and returns are larger than the referral fee, and most of them are partly in your control.
- Eightx recommends at least a 60% gross margin before a product is viable on TikTok Shop.
Once you add fulfillment, creator commission, GMV Max and returns, TikTok Shop takes roughly 38% to 52% of a first-year product’s GMV, according to one CFO firm’s July 2026 model. Whether the referral fee itself went from 6% to 8% in August is still disputed: agencies report 8%, but TikTok’s public fee table still showed 6% when we checked sources in early October.
Both numbers matter. Only one of them is the number that decides whether the channel makes you money.
Did TikTok Shop's referral fee go up to 8%?
Possibly, for some sellers. Here is what the sources say, as of October 2026.
- Delzonic (August 28, 2026) states that on August 4, 2026 TikTok Shop raised the standard US referral fee for most non-food categories from 6% to 8%, with select beauty, personal care and electronics subcategories at 9.5% to 11%.
- beBOLD (September 8, updated September 14, 2026) repeats the August 4 date but points out that TikTok’s publicly accessible category fee table, last revised in May 2026, still shows 6% for most categories and 5% for certain jewelry and pre-owned items.
- A September 15, 2026 Q4 guide from SellerGains still describes “one flat 6% referral fee” with payment processing included.
We could not find a TikTok announcement confirming the increase. So we are not going to tell you which number is right for your shop. Your settlement statements will. Open the last two in Seller Center and divide the referral fee line by the fee base. If it reads 8%, model 8%.
The difference is not trivial. beBOLD puts it at $1,000 in extra fees for every $50,000 of eligible sales.
What does TikTok Shop actually take per sale?
The referral fee is the smallest part. Eightx’s take-rate analysis (Matt Putra, July 7, 2026) models a $40 product selling 500 units a month in year one:
| Cost line | Rate | Share of GMV |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee (processing included) | 6% | 6% |
| FBT fulfillment | $3.58 per unit | about 9% |
| Creator affiliate commission | 13% average | 13% |
| GMV Max paid amplification (year 1) | 15% | 15% |
| Returns and refund fees | 3.7% blended | 3.7% |
| Total channel take | 46.7% |
That leaves 53.3% to cover the product and your profit. With a $12 cost of goods, Eightx gets $20,000 of GMV, $9,330 of channel costs and a contribution margin of 23.4%. Its range across scenarios is 38% to 52%, depending mainly on how concentrated your creators are and how many orders come back. Eightx recommends at least a 60% gross margin before a product is viable on the channel.
Two notes on that model. First, it was built on the 6% rate. If your shop now pays 8%, the same stack becomes 48.7% (our arithmetic, nothing else changed). Second, it assumes FBT is mandatory. It is not, as of October 2026: TikTok paused its plan to end Seller Shipping in February. We explain that in Is Fulfilled by TikTok required?, but the fulfillment cost line exists either way.
Here is what that means for a cheaper product, as a hypothetical. Take a $25 product with a $10 landed cost, which is exactly the 60% gross margin Eightx sets as the floor. At a 46.7% channel take, TikTok-side costs come to about $11.68 per unit, leaving $3.33, or 13.3% of the price. At 48.7%, costs rise to about $12.18 and $2.83 is left. Fifty cents a unit sounds small until you multiply it by a Black Friday week, and a product with a 50% gross margin would be close to break-even on the same stack. Low-priced impulse products are where TikTok Shop sells best, and also where the take rate bites hardest.

Which cost lines move, and which are fixed?
This is where the model becomes useful, because most of the stack is not set by TikTok.
Referral fee. Fixed by TikTok. You can only verify it.
Fulfillment. Partly yours. The FBT single-unit rate of $3.58 (0 to 4 lb) drops to $2.86 per unit on multi-unit orders, according to a June 2026 FBT guide. Bundles and multi-packs are the cheapest fulfillment lever you have.
Creator commission. Yours. TikTok sets default caps, but sellers set their own collaboration rates. Reports say payouts in beauty, supplements and home fell from about 20% to 10 to 15% after June 22, 2026. We cover what to pay now in TikTok Shop affiliate commission cuts.
GMV Max. Yours, within limits. Promotion campaigns must run through GMV Max, but you set the budget, products and ROI target. The 15% in Eightx’s model is a year-one figure, and it should fall as organic and affiliate sales build. See how to keep control of GMV Max.
Returns. Partly yours. Impulse channels return more. Listing accuracy and packaging decide much of it, and since September 2025 your seller-fault return rate also affects affiliate eligibility.
Discounts. Not in Eightx’s table, and often the biggest surprise. In our earlier TikTok Shop vs Amazon fee comparison, seller-funded discounts on one settlement cost more than the referral fee did.
How do you work out your own take rate?
Use your own numbers, not ours or Eightx’s. Here is the order we follow:
- Pull 60 days of settlement data from Seller Center and calculate the actual referral fee rate you were charged.
- Split GMV by source: affiliate video, your own content, LIVE, and the Shop tab. Each carries a different cost stack.
- Add creator commission at the rate you actually paid on affiliate orders, not your published default.
- Add fulfillment per order, using your real units per order, so multi-unit savings show up.
- Add GMV Max spend as a share of GMV. TikTok’s GMV Max Pro now shows a fuller ROI view that includes coupons, affiliate costs and platform commissions, which saves a spreadsheet step.
- Add returns, refunds and seller-funded discounts.
- Subtract the total from 100%, then subtract landed cost. What is left is contribution margin on the channel.
Run it twice, once for affiliate-driven orders and once for your own content. If the affiliate version does not clear your margin target, the channel only works for you as an owned-content business. That is a much harder business, and better to know before Q4 than after.
What we'd do this week
With Black Friday on November 27, there is still time to fix the inputs.
- Verify your referral rate from the last two settlements. Do not wait for the public fee table to be updated.
- Reprice or bundle any SKU whose contribution margin falls below your floor at the higher fee. A two-unit bundle cuts fulfillment per unit and lifts order value.
- Set creator rates by SKU, not shop-wide, so hero products carry the higher rate and low-margin items do not.
- Cap GMV Max budgets on SKUs that fail the margin test, rather than letting the algorithm push them hardest during peak.
- Lock your sample list now. If you need creator videos live for BFCM, samples need to be moving by mid-October. Our BFCM creator sample timeline has the dates.
We are not arguing against TikTok Shop. Content that creates demand, and then becomes your advertising, is worth paying for. It is just never 6%, and probably never 8% either. Frequently asked questions
Is the TikTok Shop referral fee 6% or 8% in 2026?
It depends on your shop, and sources disagree. Delzonic and beBOLD report an increase from 6% to 8% for most non-food US categories on August 4, 2026. TikTok's public fee table, last revised in May 2026, still shows 6%. Divide the referral fee on your last two settlements by the fee base to see what you actually pay.
How much does Fulfilled by TikTok cost per unit?
A June 2026 FBT guide lists $3.58 per unit for single-unit orders and $2.86 per unit on multi-unit orders, both in the 0 to 4 lb tier. In Eightx's $40 product model, the $3.58 rate works out to about 9% of GMV. Bundles lower the per-unit cost. Confirm current rates in Seller Center.
What gross margin do I need to sell on TikTok Shop?
Eightx recommends at least a 60% gross margin, because its base model leaves only 53.3% of GMV after channel costs. On a hypothetical $25 product at that 60% floor, about $3.33 per unit is left at a 46.7% take, and $2.83 at 48.7%. Thinner margins get close to break-even.
Why is TikTok Shop more expensive than its referral fee suggests?
Because the referral fee is the smallest line. In Eightx's model, creator commission averages 13% of GMV, year-one GMV Max spend is 15%, FBT fulfillment is about 9% and returns are 3.7%, against a 6% referral fee. Seller-funded discounts can add more on top.
