How big is TikTok Shop in the US, and should my Amazon brand sell there?
TikTok Shop did $11.8 billion in US GMV in H1 2026, up 103% year over year, per Momentum Works. Most Amazon brands should consider it, but launch only if margin survives the referral fee and creator commissions, the product shows well on video, and you can manage the new compliance rules.
Key takeaways
- TikTok Shop's US GMV reached $11.8 billion in H1 2026, up 103% year over year, across 1.35 million US stores.
- The Shop tab drove 51.4% of US attributed GMV, ahead of video at 40.4% and LIVE at 8.2%, so listing quality matters.
- TikTok's public table still lists a 6% referral fee for most categories, but sellers report 8% from August 4, 2026.
- In a worked example, a $30 product keeps $3.60 at an 8% fee and 15% commission versus $5.70 at 6% and 10%.
- Account Health Rating, packaging and shelf-life rules and AI content limits make a casual launch riskier than a year ago.
TikTok Shop in the US did $11.8 billion in GMV in the first half of 2026, up 103% year over year, according to Momentum Works. It is big enough that most Amazon brands should take it seriously, but whether yours should launch now depends on three things: margin after creator commissions, whether your category is one where demand starts on video, and whether you can run the operational rules TikTok added this year.
We say that as an agency that runs both. TikTok Shop is not a free extra channel bolted onto Amazon. It has its own fees, its own compliance system and its own content engine. Below is the size of the opportunity, what has changed this year, and the scorecard we use to decide go or no-go.
How big is TikTok Shop in the US now?
Momentum Works’ H1 2026 report, built on Tabcut platform data, gives the clearest numbers we have seen:
- $11.8 billion US GMV in H1 2026, up 103% year over year. The US is again TikTok Shop’s largest market.
- $50.3 billion global GMV in H1, up 92%, and “on track to surpass US$100 billion for the full year.”
- 1.35 million US stores and 20 million influencers in the ecosystem.
Forecasts differ. eMarketer, as cited in AI Weekly’s summary of the WSJ, projects US TikTok Shop sales of $23.4 billion for 2026, up about 48%. Momentum’s H1 growth rate is much higher than that. They measure different things in different ways, so treat both as direction, not precision. The direction is clear either way: this is a fast-growing channel.
1.35 million stores is also a warning. You are not early.
Where do TikTok Shop sales actually come from?
This is the number that changes how we think about launching. Momentum’s split of attributed GMV in H1 2026:
| Source | Share of US attributed GMV |
|---|---|
| Shop (the Shop tab, search and product pages) | 51.4% |
| Video | 40.4% |
| LIVE | 8.2% |
The Shop tab now drives more than half of attributed GMV. That makes TikTok Shop look more like a marketplace than it did a year ago: listing quality, search and product page conversion matter, which plays to an Amazon brand’s strengths.
Live is the smallest slice in the US, even though it is growing fast. Shopifreaks, citing CNBC, reported on September 2, 2026 that live shopping sales on TikTok more than doubled in H1 2026, with sessions up more than 60% and hours streamed up more than 80%. Both can be true: live is growing quickly from a small base. Momentum notes live remains important among top influencers, unlike in Asia where it drives much more of the platform’s GMV.
Our read: you do not need a live studio to launch. You need strong listings and a creator program that feeds video traffic into them.

What does it actually cost to sell there?
More than the headline referral fee. As of October 2026:
- Referral fee. TikTok’s public category table, revised in May 2026, still lists 6% for most categories. beBOLD reports sellers saying it rose to 8% for most non-food categories from August 4, 2026. We cannot confirm the 8% from TikTok’s own table, so check your settlement statements.
- Affiliate commission. Seller-set, but reports say typical payouts moved from around 20% to 10% to 15% in some categories after June 2026 changes. See our commission cuts post.
- Samples, fulfillment, returns and ads on top.
We break the full stack down in TikTok Shop’s real take rate and our older post on why the 6% is not the number that matters.
A worked example, hypothetical numbers. A $30 product with a 35% margin before marketplace fees leaves $10.50. At an 8% referral fee ($2.40) and a 15% affiliate commission ($4.50), you are down to $3.60 before samples, returns or ads. At 6% and 10%, you keep $5.70. That gap is why margin is the first question, not the last.
What new rules make it harder in 2026?
Three changes this year raise the operational bar, and all three tie back to one score.
- Account Health Rating. It replaced Violation Points in July 2026. Shops start at 200 points, and below 150 new listings and campaigns are blocked. Affiliate videos linked to your listings count toward your score. Details in our Account Health Rating guide.
- Packaging and shelf life. Review-incentive inserts and nine other packing practices were banned on September 3, 2026, and supplements and beauty topicals need 365 days of shelf life at delivery since June 5. See packaging and shelf-life rules.
- AI content limits. AI voices and prerecorded narration are banned in shoppable videos and lives. See AI avatars vs real creators.
None of these is a reason not to launch. All of them are reasons not to launch casually.
Is your brand a go or a no-go? The scorecard
Score each line 0, 1 or 2. This is the framework we use in early calls. It is a judgment tool, not a formula.
| Question | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margin after a 6 to 8% referral fee and a 10 to 15% commission | Under 10% left | 10 to 20% left | Over 20% left |
| Does the product show well on camera in under 10 seconds? | Needs explaining | Some visual payoff | Obvious visual payoff |
| Price point | Over $100 | $50 to $100 | Under $50 |
| Is the category active on TikTok already? | Rarely seen | Some competitors | Clear category demand |
| Can you supply 50 or more creator samples without hurting cash flow? | No | Maybe | Yes |
| Can you meet shelf-life and packaging rules? | Unsure | With changes | Already compliant |
| Do you have someone to manage creators and the health score daily? | No | Part time | Yes |
11 to 14: launch, and budget properly for samples and creator management.
7 to 10: launch one or two hero SKUs as a test before committing the catalog.
0 to 6: fix the weak lines first, or put the effort into Amazon, where the same money may go further. YouTube’s new Amazon tagging is one alternative route to creator traffic; see Amazon joins YouTube Shopping.
The price thresholds and sample count are our working rules of thumb, not TikTok data.
What about the Amazon halo?
Many brands launch on TikTok Shop hoping it will lift Amazon sales too. Sometimes it does, because shoppers see a video and search on Amazon. But we would not build the business case on that. It is hard to measure, and the effect does not hold if the TikTok shop itself loses money. Judge TikTok Shop on its own unit economics first. Repeat purchase on TikTok Shop can be weak, which we covered in an earlier post on TikTok Shop retention, so first-order economics matter.
What we'd do this week
- Run the scorecard on your top three Amazon SKUs. Pick the highest scorer as the launch product.
- Build the margin model at both 6% and 8% referral fees and at 10% and 15% commissions. If it only works at the best case, stop there.
- Check compliance before listing. Shelf-life dates, packaging and labels, especially for supplements and beauty.
- Write the listing like an Amazon listing. The Shop tab drives 51.4% of attributed GMV, so titles, images and search terms matter.
- Plan creators, not just ads. Shortlist 30 to 50 creators in your category and work back from the Black Friday sample timeline in our BFCM sample guide.
- Assign an owner for the Account Health Rating from day one.
If you want help running the numbers, our TikTok Shop management team will score your catalog with you. Figures are as of October 2026; confirm fees and rules in Seller Center before acting.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do TikTok LIVE to succeed on TikTok Shop?
Not at the start. LIVE drove 8.2% of US attributed GMV in H1 2026, per Momentum Works, although TikTok reports live shopping sales more than doubled year over year. Most brands should launch with strong listings and a creator video program, then test LIVE once those work.
Will TikTok Shop sales lift my Amazon sales?
Sometimes, because shoppers see a video and then search on Amazon. But the effect is hard to measure and should not carry the business case. Judge TikTok Shop on its own unit economics first, and treat any Amazon lift as a bonus rather than the reason to launch.
How many products should an Amazon brand launch on TikTok Shop?
Start with one or two hero SKUs that score well on margin, visual appeal and category demand. That keeps sample costs and compliance work manageable while you learn which creators convert. Add more of the catalog only once the first products are profitable and your health score is stable.
Is it too late to start on TikTok Shop in 2026?
It is not early. Momentum counts 1.35 million US stores and 20 million influencers in the ecosystem. But US GMV is still growing fast, at 103% year over year in H1 2026. Brands with good margins and products that show well on camera can still win; undifferentiated products will struggle.
