Is TikTok Still Gen Z’s Search Engine? What the 2026 Data Shows

Do people still use TikTok instead of Google?

Many use TikTok to search, but few prefer it to Google. An Adobe Express survey published in February 2026 found Gen Z preferring TikTok over Google fell from 8% to 4%, while 49% of US consumers used TikTok for search. Reddit and ChatGPT are gaining as places people check before buying.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok search use is rising, with 49% of US consumers in the 2026 Adobe Express survey using it to search, up from 41% in 2024.
  • Only 4% of Gen Z respondents prefer TikTok over Google, down from 8% in 2024.
  • Respondents rated Google 85% helpful for search, Reddit 29%, ChatGPT 26% and TikTok 16%.
  • The survey's Gen Z sample is small, so treat the figures as a signal rather than a census.
  • Product discovery is fragmenting across several platforms, so brands should show up where their own buyers check.

Yes and no. Plenty of Gen Z still search on TikTok, but very few now prefer it to Google: an Adobe Express survey published in February 2026 found the share of Gen Z who prefer TikTok over Google fell from 8% to 4%, while Reddit and ChatGPT gained ground as places people check.

The useful conclusion for a product brand isn’t “TikTok search is over” or “Google is dead.” It’s that product discovery is spreading across several places at once, and you need to show up in the ones your buyers actually check.

What does the 2026 data actually say?

The headline number comes from an Adobe Express survey reported by Search Engine Journal on February 25, 2026. The key findings:

Finding20242026
US consumers who used TikTok for search41%49%
Gen Z who prefer TikTok over Google8%4%
Business owners planning to increase TikTok affiliate investment53%38%

And from the 2026 survey alone:

  • 65% of Gen Z respondents used TikTok for search, but only 25% found it effective.
  • 14% of consumers said they’re more likely to rely on ChatGPT than Google, and that was fairly even across ages (12% Gen Z, 15% millennials, 15% Gen X, 14% baby boomers).
  • When asked which platforms were helpful for search: Google 85%, Reddit 29%, ChatGPT 26%, YouTube 24%, TikTok 16%.
  • 58% of business owners surveyed had used TikTok for promotions.

Read those together and the picture is clear. More people are using TikTok to search, but fewer treat it as their main search tool, and few rate it as the most helpful. Usage went up; preference and trust didn’t.

How reliable is that survey?

Treat it as a signal, not a census. Search Engine Journal flags the limits itself: 1,007 respondents in total (807 consumers and 200 small business owners), a sample that skews toward millennials (53%), Gen Z making up only 15% of consumer respondents, and no published margin of error.

So the Gen Z figures rest on a small group, and the drop from 8% to 4% is a small number halving. We wouldn’t build a strategy on that one stat.

There’s also data pointing the other way. YPulse reported in September 2025 that 86% of Gen Z search on TikTok weekly, close to the 90% who use traditional search engines, and that 82% of 13-to-39-year-olds have used social media to search for content, news and products. That study was commissioned by TikTok, which you should weigh accordingly.

The two sources aren’t really contradicting each other. One measures how often people search on TikTok (a lot). The other measures whether they prefer it to Google (rarely). Both can be true: people check TikTok all the time, for some kinds of question, and still go to Google for most of them.

What do people actually search TikTok for?

YPulse’s breakdown is the practical part: Gen Z uses TikTok for fashion, beauty advice, cooking, entertainment and DIY, and Google for broader, general queries.

That maps to what we see with consumer product brands. TikTok search is strong for questions where seeing the product in use is the answer:

  • “Does this actually work?” (before-and-after, demos)
  • “How to wear / use / style X”
  • “Best X for Y” when the buyer wants a real person’s take
  • Product names they saw in a video and want to check again

It’s weak for spec comparisons, compatibility, prices across retailers, return policies and anything where text and tables are faster than video. Those go to Google, Amazon, Reddit or, increasingly, an AI assistant.

So where should a product brand show up?

Wherever your buyer checks before they buy, for your category. Discovery is fragmenting rather than moving to one winner. Here’s how we think about each place:

WhereWhat buyers use it forWhat it takes to show up
GoogleGeneral research, specs, where to buySEO, Shopping ads, Merchant Center feed
AmazonPrice, reviews, fast deliveryListing quality, reviews, PPC
TikTok“Show me it works,” trends, stylingCreator videos, TikTok Shop, searchable captions and on-screen text
RedditHonest opinions, “is it worth it”Real mentions in threads; you can’t buy credibility there
ChatGPT and AI answersShortlists and summariesBeing described consistently across reviews, Reddit and your own site
YouTubeLonger reviews and tutorialsReviewer seeding, your own explainers

Reddit’s 29% helpfulness score is the number we’d pay most attention to. It’s ahead of TikTok, and Reddit threads increasingly feed the answers AI tools give. We wrote about that link in how Reddit threads shape AI answers.

Should brands still invest in TikTok?

Yes, if your buyers are there and your product shows well on video. The data doesn’t say TikTok stopped mattering. It says TikTok is one stop on the path, not the whole path.

Note the business-side number too: the share of owners planning to increase TikTok affiliate investment fell from 53% to 38%. Some of that is likely cost and complexity; TikTok Shop has become more demanding to run well. Our post on whether an Amazon brand should launch TikTok Shop covers that decision.

Our own client data shows how uneven TikTok returns can be. In one account, 2,449 affiliates posted, and the top four videos drove about 57% of video revenue (details here). TikTok rewards a few strong pieces of content, which is a different investment profile from search ads or SEO.

What we'd do this week

  1. Ask your customers where they looked. Add one question to your post-purchase survey or follow-up email: “Where did you research this before buying?” Give options: Google, Amazon, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, ChatGPT or another AI tool, a friend.
  2. Search your own category everywhere. Type your top three category questions into Google, Amazon, TikTok, Reddit and ChatGPT. Note who shows up and whether you do.
  3. Make your TikTok content searchable. Put the words people search in captions and on-screen text, not just trending sounds.
  4. Check how AI tools describe you. If ChatGPT gets your product wrong, the fix is usually clearer information on your site and real mentions elsewhere, not a trick.
  5. Put budget where your answers point, not where the headlines are this month.

A note on timing: these surveys measure what people say they do, not what they do. Your own data, from post-purchase surveys, branded search trends on Google and Amazon, and TikTok Shop search terms, will tell you more about your buyers than any national survey. Use the industry numbers to decide what to check, then let your customers’ answers decide where the budget goes.

The mistake to avoid is chasing a single channel because a statistic went viral. “Gen Z searches on TikTok instead of Google” was overstated in 2024, and “TikTok search is dead” would be overstated now.

If you want help working out which channels matter for your category, we cover TikTok through our TikTok Shop management service and Google through Google Ads management. For the next step on TikTok specifically, see our explainer on TikTok search ads.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok replacing Google for product searches?

No. TikTok is one stop on the path rather than a replacement. In the 2026 Adobe Express survey, 85% rated Google helpful for search against 16% for TikTok. TikTok is strongest for show-me questions in beauty, fashion, food and DIY, while Google still handles most general and spec-driven searches.

Why is Reddit gaining as a search tool?

People want honest opinions from real users before they buy, and Reddit threads supply them. Reddit scored 29% for helpfulness in the 2026 survey, ahead of TikTok. Reddit content also feeds the answers AI tools give, so being discussed there can affect how ChatGPT describes your product.

How many people use ChatGPT instead of Google?

In the Adobe Express survey reported in February 2026, 14% of consumers said they are more likely to rely on ChatGPT than Google. The figure was fairly consistent across ages, at 12% for Gen Z and 15% for millennials, which suggests AI search is not just a young-user habit.

Should small brands stop investing in TikTok?

Not if their buyers are there and the product shows well on video. The data says TikTok is one part of discovery, not that it stopped mattering. Ask customers where they researched before buying and weight your budget toward the channels they actually name.
