Is Walmart Marketplace worth it for an Amazon brand in 2026?
For established brands with clean catalog data and spare inventory, usually yes as a tested second channel. Walmart has no setup or monthly fee, referral fees run from 3% to 20% by category, and New-Seller Savings offers up to $75K. Budget for your own ads, since Walmart's ad credit is only $500.
Key takeaways
- Walmart Marketplace charges no setup or monthly fee, compared with $39.99 a month for Amazon's Professional plan.
- Walmart referral fees range from 3% to 20% by category, for example 8% for Consumer Electronics and 15% for Home, Kitchen, Decor and Garden.
- New-Seller Savings offers up to $75K for sellers who go live after February 1, 2026, and the program runs to January 31, 2027.
- Reported referral fee cuts in 14 categories from June 22, 2026 have no published old-versus-new rates, so confirm your category in Seller Center.
- Model Walmart bottom-up per SKU and set a 90-day ad test budget before launch.
For most established Amazon brands with clean catalog data and spare inventory, Walmart Marketplace is worth testing in 2026, as long as you treat it as a separate channel with its own ad budget rather than a free copy of your Amazon sales. Walmart charges no setup or monthly fee, its referral fees run from 3% to 20% depending on category, and new sellers who go live in 2026 can get up to $75K in fee savings.
What it will not do is hand you Amazon-level volume because you uploaded the same listings. Below are the current fees as of October 2026, the new-seller incentives, a realistic way to model your first year, and the cases where we would tell a brand to wait.
What are Walmart's seller fees now?
Walmart’s public pricing page states “zero setup, monthly, or hidden fees.” Compare that with Amazon’s Professional plan at $39.99 a month. You pay a referral fee on each sale, plus fulfillment fees if you use Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS).
Referral fees range from 3% (for the portion of a Watches sale above $1,500) to 20% (for the portion of a Jewelry sale up to $250). A few categories Amazon brands often sell in, as listed on Walmart’s page in early October 2026:
| Category | Walmart referral fee |
|---|---|
| Consumer Electronics | 8% |
| Personal Computers | 6% |
| Home, Kitchen, Decor and Garden | 15% |
| Pet Supplies | 15% |
| Toys and Games | 15% |
| Beauty, Health and Personal Care | 8% up to $10, 15% above $10 |
| Apparel and Accessories | 5% up to $15, 10% from $15 to $20, 15% above $20 |
About the reported fee cuts. Beancount and others report that Walmart cut referral fees in 14 categories on June 22, 2026, with the deepest cuts in apparel, consumer electronics and home goods, and that the change appeared in Seller Center as a routine policy update rather than an announcement. We could not find old-versus-new rates for those 14 categories in any source, and Walmart has not published a press release on it. Use the rates on Walmart’s own pricing page and in Seller Center as the current truth, and confirm your category before you build a P&L.
WFS. Walmart says shipping with WFS costs 15% less than the competition on average (its claim, not an independent test). Its pricing page lists fulfillment fees starting at $3.45 for items up to 1 lb and storage at $0.75 per cubic foot per month in the regular season, with peak-season surcharges. You can also ship from your own warehouse or a 3PL, as long as you can handle returns.

What does New-Seller Savings actually give you?
Walmart’s New-Seller Savings 2026 program offers up to $75K in promotional savings for sellers who go live after February 1, 2026. The program runs from February 2, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The pieces:
- Referral fee discounts: 20% off base referral fees on your first $50K in GMV, 30% off from $50K to $500K, and 40% off above $500K. This is where nearly all of the $75K comes from (up to $72K).
- WFS: 10% off fulfillment fees, up to $2,000 in savings.
- Search engine marketing: a 50% rebate, up to $1,000.
- Walmart Connect ads: up to $500 in ad credits.
You opt in from the payments page after you go live. Walmart says savings vary by seller and eligibility criteria apply.
Two honest observations. First, the headline $75K only applies if you sell well over $500K on Walmart in the program window, so most new sellers will see a fraction of it. Second, the ad credit is $500. That will not launch a brand. Plan your own Walmart Connect budget.
Some third-party articles describe the program differently (one we read cites “75% off referral fees”). Walmart’s own page is the version to trust.
Is Walmart worth it compared with Amazon?
The scale is different. Walmart Marketplace has passed 200,000 active sellers according to 2026 trade coverage, against about 2.5 million active Amazon sellers globally cited by SellerSprite. Fewer sellers means less competition per search, but also fewer shoppers searching.
Here is how we weigh it for an Amazon brand:
| Factor | Amazon | Walmart Marketplace |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $39.99 (Professional) | $0 |
| Referral fees | Category-based | 3% to 20% by category, some lower than Amazon’s |
| New-seller incentives | Limited | Up to $75K, through January 31, 2027 |
| Competition per search | High | Lower in many categories |
| Shopper volume | Much higher | Lower |
| Ads | Mature, deep tooling | Walmart Connect, smaller and less granular |
| Requirements | Brand Registry for many tools | Business tax ID, GTINs/UPCs, WFS or a warehouse that handles returns |
The brands that do well on Walmart usually share three traits: products that sell on everyday value rather than novelty, real GTINs and clean catalog data, and enough inventory to stock a second channel without starving Amazon in Q4.
The brands that struggle are often single-SKU brands with thin margins, brands whose Amazon business is not yet profitable, and brands that expect organic sales without advertising.
What does a realistic first year look like?
We will not give you a percentage of Amazon sales to expect, because we have not seen a reliable benchmark and every category is different. Instead, model it bottom-up. A hypothetical example:
For a $35 kitchen product weighing under 1 lb, with a $9 landed cost:
- Referral fee at 15%: $5.25. With the New-Seller Savings 20% discount on the first $50K in GMV: $4.20.
- WFS fulfillment from $3.45 per unit, less 10% under the program while credits last: about $3.11.
- Contribution before ads: $35 minus $9, $4.20 and $3.11 = $18.69 per unit.
Now the ad question. If you need, say, $6 of Walmart Connect spend per unit sold in the first months to get reviews and rank, you are at about $12.69 per unit. At 150 units a month (again hypothetical), that is roughly $1,900 a month in contribution, before any team time, storage or returns. Run the same arithmetic with your real numbers and a pessimistic sales estimate.
Budget for ads deliberately. Walmart’s own credits are small, so plan a monthly test budget you can sustain for at least three months before judging the channel. Ad spend on a listing that does not convert just buys a more expensive lesson, which is the point we made in PPC is an amplifier, not a fix.
What we'd do this week
If you are an Amazon brand considering Walmart:
- Pick 5 to 10 SKUs, not the whole catalog. Choose proven sellers with healthy margin and stable supply.
- Check your category fee on Walmart’s pricing page and in Seller Center, and build a per-unit P&L like the one above. Treat the reported June fee cuts as unconfirmed until you see your category’s rate.
- Confirm your GTINs and business documents are in order before applying.
- Decide fulfillment: WFS for speed of setup, or your 3PL if it already handles returns well.
- Apply and go live before January 31, 2027 if you want New-Seller Savings, and opt in from the payments page once live.
- Set a 90-day ad test budget and a clear stop or scale rule before you launch.
If you would like us to model the channel for your catalog, our Walmart Marketplace team does this for Amazon brands, or you can start with a free audit of your Amazon account first.
